Tell the story of The Christmas Truce of 1914, where opposing soldiers engaged in World War I combat laid down their arms and celebrated the Christmas holiday together!
What happened on Christmas Eve 1914?Over Christmas 1914, singing and soccer broke out between British and German forces. A memorial commemorating the 1914 Christmas Truce in England. (Max Mumby/Indigo/Getty Images) On Christmas Eve 1914, in the dank, muddy trenches on the Western Front of the first world war, a remarkable thing happened. It came to be called the Christmas Truce.
How did truces work in WW1?Despite this, there were some isolated incidents of soldiers holding brief truces later in the war, and not only at Christmas. In what was known as the 'LLive and Let Live' system, in quiet sectors of the front line, brief pauses in the hostilities were sometimes tacitly agreed, allowing both sides to repair their trenches or gather their dead.
How many people took part in the Christmas truce?A Time magazine story on the 100 anniversary claimed that as many as 100,000 people took part. At least one account has survived of a Christmas Truce gone bad: the story of Private Percy Huggins, a Briton who was relaxing in No Man’s Land with the enemy when a sniper shot to the head killed him and set off more bloodshed.
